Life Investment

By Pastor Timothy Tin (Jun 2020)

COVID-19 has hit hard on the economy of the whole world, especially the U.S. Even Warren Buffett, the business tycoon was shocked, “I have never seen anything like this during the past 89 years of my life!” On March 3, before the outbreak of COVID-19 in the U.S., he invested $350 million in The Bank of New York Mellon and bought 976,507 shares of Delta Airlines. According to Forbes, on May 2, Berkshire Hathaway lost $50 billion last quarter as Buffett’s investments took a hit from COVID-19. Admitting his investment mistakes in a general meeting of shareholders, he resolved to sell out all the shares of the 4 major airlines (Delta, A.A., Southwest, and U.A.)!

If Buffett, the business tycoon, can’t boast about his investment mistakes, neither can an average investor. Besides monetary investment, there are many other kinds of investments in life, such as health, education, and raising children.

Good diets and exercises could bring a healthy life. Good education might bring a prospective career. Nourishing good children could bring a good return in the future for us.

Besides the above “visible investments”, there are also “invisible investments”. Relationships need a good plan of investment too. In marriage or friendship, we need to put in our time, money, and efforts in order to see results.

A long time ago, a successful and rich young leader went to ask Jesus, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17) This young man had done an outstanding investment with wealth and social status. Yet when Jesus told him “One thing you lack. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Mark 10:21) And the young man sadly left!

A person can earn the whole world but there is always something missing – the joy of eternal life! Jesus said, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Mark 8:36-37) There is no “TAKE 2” for life!

If you committed your life to Jesus, believed that he had died on the cross for your sins and came back to life on the third day, you have begun your investment for eternity!
