【英文小課堂】又見雪飄過

一月份是新一年的開始，又是雪季 (season of snowfall)的時候。當我們興高采烈地向親友，彼此祝賀新年快樂之際，但見門前、街道及公路都鋪滿厚雪 (covered with thick snow)，風雪的來臨，並不是令人太高興的事情。

原來紐約市冬季平均降雪量約為 25 英寸(inches)。而海洋氣象服務 (Ocean Weather Services) 預測，紐約市 2022-23 年冬季的降雪量很可能在 22 至 27 英寸之間。(https://freetoursbyfoot.com/snow-in-new-york/)

飄雪的冬天穿什麼好呢？

1. 防水外套 (waterproof jacket)
2. 多層衣服 (extra layers)：方便在室內可以逐層脫掉衣服(remove clothing) 。超輕的 (Ultra-light) 保暖羽絨背心，是明智的選擇。
3. 雨傘 (umbrella)
4. 冬季配件：保暖羊毛襪、圍巾、保暖帽和手套、暖手器、防水靴或鞋。(Winter Accessories: Warm wool socks, a scarf, a warm hat and gloves, a hand warmer, Waterproof boots or shoes.)

俗語有云，天有不測之風雲。(The weather can be unpredictable.) 氣象局雖然可以預測風雪的來臨，卻不是每次都百分之百準確，更不能阻止風雪的來臨。

難怪在一千九百多年前，耶穌的弟弟雅各曾說：

「其 實 明 天 如 何 ， 你 們 還 不 知 道 。 你 們 的 生 命 是 甚 麼 呢 ？ 你 們 原 來 是 一 片 雲 霧 ， 出 現 少 時 就 不 見 了 。」(雅各書4:14)

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” (James 4:14)

再者，遠在二千四百多年前，一位很有智慧的王帝，所羅門王早已明白，人類生活在上帝創造的大自然定律規限下，上帝並將永恆觀(a sense of eternity)放在我們心裏：

「 凡 事 都 有 定 期 ， 天 下 萬 務 都 有 定 時 。生 有 時 ， 死 有 時 ； 栽 種 有 時 ， 拔 出 所 栽 種 的 也 有 時⋯⋯ 上 帝 造 萬 物 ， 各 按 其 時 成 為 美 好 ， 又 將 永 生 （ 原 文 是 永 遠 ） 安 置 在 世 人 心 裡 。 然 而 上 帝 從 始 至 終 的 作 為 ， 人 不 能 參 透 。」（傳道書3:1-11)

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot …He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-11)

 不妨在這雪飄過的日子裏，思想一下，所羅門王所說的永恆永生到底是什麼一回事。
