又要考試？

小學生是否天真爛漫(innocent)，無憂無慮(carefree)，不用為生活憂慮(to live without a worry in the world)？箇中滋味，不是我們成年人或家長可以輕易理解的。 (What kids have to go through is not something that we adults or parents can easily understand.)

學生們每天清早起來，背着沉重的背包(backpack)上學去，回家後就要溫習書本和做習作。三年級至八年級的學生，每年的春季更要參加一個州立英語考試(NY State English Language Arts- ELA test)。新移民(new immigrant)的學生來美國不夠一年，雖然暫時不用考這個試，翌年就要進入考場了。今年的ELA考試將會在4月19-20日舉行。健康有特殊情況的學生(students with special conditions)，會用紐約州替代性評估試 (NY State Alternate Assessments – NYSAA)取代ELA考試。

ELA考試為期兩天，原則上是沒有時限的(untimed)。當我被指派監考(proctor)的時候，若大部份學生完成了考試，我就要帶領未答完試題的學生到另一個房間，個別繼續完成考試。

試題的內容包括有：閱讀短文(short passages)之後，回答多項選擇題(multiple choices)；以及閱讀各項故事(stories)、專題文章(articles)或詩詞(poems)之後，用自己的話回答問題。

禮記有云，玉不琢不成器、人不學不知道。甚至連古代的武學奇才方世玉，聽聞都要打木人行才能出關。小學生要經歷考試，我們也要經歷人生考驗吧。

難怪有兩位親身經驗人生歷練的作者，保羅和彼得有以下的體驗：

「……現在的苦楚若比起將來要顯於我們的榮耀就不足介意了。」

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

（羅馬書 Romans 8:18）

「…在百般的試煉中暫時憂愁，叫你們的信心既被試驗，就比那被火試驗仍然能壞的金子更顯寶貴，可以在耶穌基督顯現的時候得著稱讚、榮耀、尊貴。」

“In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
