年月日 誰來定？

當你為自己，或者為你的孩子，改英文名字的時候，是根據什麼原則？我發現很多女孩子都喜歡月份（month）名字：四月April，五月May，六月June，11月Novem（November）等等。

一年有十二個月，我們用阿拉伯數字寫月份比較容易，第一個月就叫1月，第二個月就是2月，如此類推（so on and so forth）。但是英文要寫月份，就不是數目字1234這麼簡單。7月不是叫7號月（month number seven），而是叫「July」。

原來「July」* 這個月份名稱，是為紀念尤利烏斯·凱撒而命名（in honor of Julius Caesar），他是一位為羅馬帝國（Roman Empire） 東征西討的大將軍（general），後來自稱為羅馬獨裁者（Roman dictator），不夠一年，就在公元前44年被反對派（opposition faction）暗殺（assassinated）了。為了平息（pacify）擁戴尤利烏斯·凱撒的民眾，反對派的人就把他生日的月份，原本名稱「昆蒂利斯」（Quintilis）改名為「July」。「Quintilis」是拉丁文5月的意思，在古羅馬曆法（ancient Roman calendar）的第5個月。但在公元前154年的叛亂（rebellion）後才變成7月。

小時候，我喜歡扮作「有書卷氣」（scholar style），就多閱讀書籍，各類書籍都讀一兩本：例如宗教書籍的佛學（buddhism），金庸、古龍的武俠小說（martial arts novels），瓊瑤的言情小說（romance novel）《煙雨濛濛》，曹雪芹的古典章回小說（classic chapter novels）《紅樓夢》等等。不過，我長大了，都把這些書籍內容通通忘記得一乾二淨。但是，對於三千多年前作者摩西（Moses）所寫的智慧字句，今天我仍然印象猶新（fresh in memory），讓我知道年月日的來由…
