【英文小課堂】秋天的童話

秋天(fall)，是學生告別暑假回校的時候，也是滿山楓葉(maple leaves)， 登山郊游的好季節(season)。有人愛夏天的熱情如火；卻愁秋天的憂鬱暗淡(gloomy)。但是看看造物主為楓葉塗上的顏色 (colors)，有黃色、橙色、紅色、褐色，甚至有紫色的(yellow, orange, red, brown, and purple)，怎可能不讚嘆大自然的奇偉！

很多年前我曾經去過紐約上州的大熊山公園(Bear Mountain Park)，滿山遍佈不同顏色的楓葉，就像進入了童話的世界(a world of fairy tales)！不過，在這個童話世界裡的大熊山，也有商業推出的活動，例如：

• 大熊山旅店(Bear Mountain Inn)
• 租划艇 (Boat Rentals)
• 露營地段(Campsites)
• 禮品店(Gift Shop)

秋天當然少不了詩意。我的小學一年級學生很喜歡唸一些秋天落葉的詩(poem):

Fall Leaves

One is orange,
Two are brown,
Three look yellow
On the ground.
Three are green,
Two bright red,
One just fell
Upon my head!

這首詩的意思是：秋葉，一片橙色，兩片啡色，三片黃色，在地上。三片綠色，兩片紅色，一片掉下來，在我的頭上！

紐約市四季分明，令我想起聖經中充滿智慧的所羅門王，也寫了一篇萬物有定時的文章：

「天下萬物都有定期，凡事都有定時…哭泣有時，歡笑有時；哀傷有時，雀躍有時..祂使萬事各按其時變得美好，又把永恆的意識放在人心裡，人卻不能測透上帝從始至終的作為。」（傳道書3:1,4,11）

 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance… He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1,4,11)
